New Year, New Things

The carnival at the end of the Festival of Lights

Happy New Year, all. The new year comes with a number of changes for us. The first and foremost of which is that we now have a new (i.e. different) car. Our 1995 Silhouette is going away and a beautiful 2001 Odyssey is taking it’s place. Except for being silver, it is just like our red one.

What a joy it is to get a new car that is exactly like one you already drive.

Another change is that Ping-Ping’s “little sister”‘s friend never did get adopted. When her American family showed up, the girl decided she wanted to stay in China with her foster grandfather, whom she loved and who paid for her heart surgery when she was little.

This was terribly sad for the American family who spent so much time, money, and love on this girl only to be rejected. But it was nice for Mei Mei, who is now not alone after all.

The upshot of this is that she is now not interested in coming to America. This means that I do not need to perform the nigh impossible feat of trying to get a visa for an orphan. Instead, we can concentrate on what Ping-Ping really wants…which is to bring the Incomparable YiYi to visit, possibly as a high school exchange student. YiYi, who may be the sweetest girl in the universe, has a family and may not have any trouble at all getting a student visa. We love her and are all really delighted about the idea of having her possibly come. (YiYi adopted John and I as Gama and Gaba, which was translated by the Box as “Mother by Affection” and “Father by Affection.” We thought this was adorable.)

The third change is that we moved the large rabbit hutch inside. The rabbit had outgrown his little house, and it seemed a shame to waste the nice hutch Bill made. He took the roof off and put some wire underneath and brought it in. It fights surprisingly well in the living room…except for the fact that the rabbit keeps moving the bedding stuff in such a way as to make it smell really bad. We have some ideas on how to fix it, but have not fixed it yet.

The fourth change is that a Wii has come to our household…our first, ever, gaming system. This, combined with the fact that we now have computers downstairs means that I did not see the kids over the entire break…except for the night I took them out to the night time Carnival at the end of the Festival of Lights at Bull Run. They LOVED that. It was so much fun to see the joy on our daughter’s face as she went around the Ferris wheel with her brother.
