When it comes to anime, I think a lot of people lost interest because of where Japan has moved in the decade. Their obsession with cute girls doing nothing has overtaken their love of adventure and action. There's a lot of pseudo-porn out there in the mainstream now. I actually find most old school and older anime fans will watch anything as long as it's good, whether space opera, fantasy, action, psychological drama, or even romance. I find the same thing with fans of older fiction as well.
Some anime is about as across the board like A. Merritt is. Blood Blockade Battlefront mixes fantasy, science fiction, horror, and a Christian worldview all in an original package and that just came out in 2015.
