07:40 am: Kicking Puppies While They Are Down

Sad Puppies

This weekend, a lot of fans have acted in a disappointing, mob-mentality manner. Fans, I’m sorry to say, on both sides.

A lot of good authors received Hugo award nominations on Saturday…after hard work and the support of many fans.

But two people crying “The sky is falling! Gamergate is coming!” ruined it for a great many people.

The idea came into people’s heads that the Hugos had been hijacked and the nominations were illegitimate—people who did not bother looking into how the Sad Puppies campaign was run. (There was even a libelous—quickly retracted—Entertainment Weekly article based on some of this false information. EW had to issue a lengthy apology.)

Folks, it is true that more fans chose this year’s winners than any other year. But the difference between this year and last year was: 199.

Yep. 199 more fans signed up.

Not really an attack by the galloping hordes.

For this…199 new votes this year…people are calling to vote No Award, rather than read the works and pick the one you find the best.

What is this, folks? Elementary school?

So why did people say that Gamergate swung the vote?

Because one—note the word ONE—longtime fan is a Gamergate guy, too, and wrote a tweet calling on friends to support his favorite authors.

This gentleman, who goes by the name of Daddy Warpig, left this in the comments a post about the EW article:

Daddy Warpig commented on Entertainment Weekly guilty of libel?

BRAD: A letter I sent to the editors of Entertainment Weekly. To whom it may concern, I am writing to point out some …

As the shining, guilt-proving link between #GamerGate and Sad Puppies (according to Patrick Nielsen Hayden and followers):

1 – I only nominated works I read.

2 – I didn’t nominate Sad Puppies works I had read, because I didn’t believe they deserved it.

3 – I nominated other works I felt deserved it, which didn’t make it.

I’m glad I participated, and I’m looking forward to participating next year.

Also, I’m a nobody, who had nothing to do with Sad Puppies except sending out some tweets and joining Sasquan. PNH used my tweets to defame everyone in Sad Puppies. That’s despicable.

The people of Sad Puppies won a victory. #GamerGate had little or nothing to do with it.

Congrats, and good luck beating No Award!

For this, you kicked your friends when they were vulnerable?

And the Puppy fans, alas, were hardly better. For every Hugo nomination receiver I know who was attacked, I know an innocent Liberal fan who was ravaged by Puppy supporters.

Yesterday was a sad day for fluffy baby animals of all varieties.

And Friday.

And it's Turkmen, and it's not "dog," it's a specific dog.

The dictator of Turkmenistan.

I think that if Vox Day ever ran a country, it would be Turkmenistan crossed with the Independent State of Croatia.

I'm pretty sure you misread Making Light, though I'll grant their claims shifted.

It started with them being angry (justifiably so, in my opinion) about the effect of the puppies slates on the Hugo ballot.

This was followed by a concern (not entirely crazy) that gamergaters would come in with internet harassment, doxxing, and SWATing. As I understand it, gamergate had actually lost so much momentum that they are no longer with worrying about, but I could be wrong. I also suspect that gamergaters could re-activate themselves, but they care about games, not text sf.

Meanwhile, there was evidence that gamergaters were recruiting people to get supporting memberships and vote, though I think that's a small part of the story.

Harassment, doxxing, and SWATting are a very Vox thing to do.

We are talking about a man who stalked my friend through my youtube favorites, posted some videos she made on his blog in an attempt to humiliate her, and contacted her. And then he tries to justify what he did because not only did she dismiss anything Vox had to say, she actively ingratiated me into her circle of friends.

If I had to say something nice about the Sad Puppies, it's that all the terrible things Vox does will be brought into the light.

Andrew, you are always welcome here, but really...isn't there anything in life that interest you other than hatred of Vox.

That can't be a happy life. You deserve to have something more wonderful in your life.

First, please feel free to call me Jagi. I know you don’t like me, but I am very fond of you. You are one of the few people who come here to visit me.

Second…there is a demon of malice that whispers in your ear, sticking you with its claws the way the Black Beast drove Evnyssen in The Black Cauldron. But even closer to you is the tiny voice that whispers “Fear not.”

Listen to that voice and it will cast the black beast away, and your life will be filled with joy.

I am rooting for you!

There's more of us than you might think :-)
We are just quiet, a bit shy, and in also in my case, don't want to say anything unless we have something worth saying.

1) Gamergate has not lost momentum.

2) Almost immediately, Gamergate started self policing last Sept. They set up a link where anyone could report any bad behavior by Gamergate folks...doxing, threats. Etc. They worked with Twitter on this and could get an account shut down in less than 20 seconds.

3) The reason we don't hear much about them is that the guys who actually care about gaming are well behaved...not the jerks who acted out at first.

4) Making Light spread the rumor and it upset a lot of people.

Thanks for the information. For what it's worth, gamergate taking up self-policing wasn't something I'd heard about at all.

Having read a moderate amount from both sides in this, I've come to the general conclusion that people wildly underestimate the effects of insults and threats from their own side. Anyone who reads this and thinks I'm only talking about the Other Side has missed my point.

I've also come to the conclusion that a lot of what makes politics such a mind-killing subject is that people go from Other Side is proposing Something Bad to Other Side will win completely to Other Side will impose Bad Thing and then Do Worse.

Sometimes the world really is like that, but mostly it isn't and applying that sort of thinking to relatively ordinary disagreements makes life a lot worse.

I am also surprised that the Gamergate self policing thing doesn't get more press.

Yes. I think you are entirely right! I see that, too.

It is unfair to say that "GamerGate swung the vote". But whether Sad Puppies swung the vote is undeniable: you proposed 58 nominations and 48 of them are on the ballot. When 199 new ballots are out of somewhere between 800 and 1200 total for most categories, a difference will be felt in the results.

Which brings up an open question of whether it's fair to plug that many works for nomination at once. Do you know if that's been done before? Or is Sad Puppies just the most successful attempt?

Had Brad had even the slightest inkling that he would be so successful...that so many fans would throw themselves behind Sad Puppies, he never would have offered five in a category.

He would have either offered, say three, or just put out a list of ten for people to choose from.

The point of the 199 is: it wasn't the 20,000 new votes a GG would have brought in.

199 is what you expect for a campaign that was more widely spread around that last year.
