Weirder than Fiction
Apparently, taking the Pill makes you more likely to seek out the wrong kind of guy...based on smell. The logic, once you read the article, makes a lot of sense, but....weird!
I can vouch that depo shots don't have the same effect--at least not on me. (Got it to avoid dealing with that time of month while I was on my ship-- met my husband, and he still smells sexy as heck, long after that junk left my system.)
One of the things that SF writers love to speculate on is the unintended and undesirable side effects of misused science. I am mainly thinking of "Brave New World", "Gattace", and "Nausicaa" (the graphic novels more so than the movie). Of the three, Miyazaki is the only one to draw out the logical conclusions of the wonderous world he invented.
One of the things I suspected after reading "Brave New World" was that it was the cold scientific (and now I modify that supposition to include hedonist) view of the modern that will lead to it. I am saddened to see myself proven right.
Though, this particular side effect is very wierd indeed.
