05:23 pm: Weirder than Fiction

Apparently, taking the Pill makes you more likely to seek out the wrong kind of guy...based on smell. The logic, once you read the article, makes a lot of sense, but....weird!

Well, the idea is that you will find someone genetically dissimilar to you...kinda the Romeo and Juliet effect which is apparently desirable?

Hmm. Where does this leave the aftershave and perfume manufacturers?

What I thought was interesting was that when you were in pregnant mode, you liked the smell of genetically similar things...ie family.

I know perfumes smell different depending on who's wearing them-- white shoulders has been "the" perfume for my mom's side of the family for three generations. Smelled different on Granny than it does on mom, and it doesn't smell as good on me.

Right. And women within the same family usually have preferences that are markedly different.

Now there's a side effect I wouldn't have predicted decades ago. And a potentially very serious one. Especially if it makes the woman less choosy in subtler ways, as well.

One wonders how much relationship woe and male/female conflict can be traced to this over the last few decades.

I can vouch that depo shots don't have the same effect--at least not on me. (Got it to avoid dealing with that time of month while I was on my ship-- met my husband, and he still smells sexy as heck, long after that junk left my system.)

One of the things that SF writers love to speculate on is the unintended and undesirable side effects of misused science. I am mainly thinking of "Brave New World", "Gattace", and "Nausicaa" (the graphic novels more so than the movie). Of the three, Miyazaki is the only one to draw out the logical conclusions of the wonderous world he invented.

One of the things I suspected after reading "Brave New World" was that it was the cold scientific (and now I modify that supposition to include hedonist) view of the modern that will lead to it. I am saddened to see myself proven right.

Though, this particular side effect is very wierd indeed.
