12:53 pm: Ping Ping and Avatar: Legend of Korra

Last night we were watching the new Avatar series, and the princess exclaimed in delight: "Look, my name is on the computer."

It was a scene of a guy in a mask talking on a stage. To either side was a huge Chinese character in black on red. It was the character for Ping (peace) — one on either side, so it said "Ping-Ping" (peaceful.)

In the series, of course, it's in the "Peace When You Surrender" context.

Yes. I thought it was rather funny that they picked the Peace symbol. I wondered if they did it for its meaning or because it looks cool.

Either way, the princess was utterly delighted.'

She's not really peaceful either.

Having done some digging of my own, I found that the symbol also means "equal" (or "flat"; I'm guessing it's based on the idea of a flat and therefore calm ocean). So it's a perfect summation of the Equalist platform: "with benders, we are turbulent, but when all are equal we will be at peace."

Btw, isn't that series beautiful? I think it's even better-written and animated than the original Avatar: The Last Airbender.
