09:29 am: Nano No Nano

First…I hope to download my daughter’s Halloween pictures today and upload a few of them here. The kids were peepin’ adorable this year. The girls particularly. Ling Shan did her face up with Halloween makeup and looked exactly like one of those Chinese demon masks. She was adorable. Ping-Ping was the cutest mauve pirate in existence, and she got a lovely picture with her brother dressed as Luigi from Mario Brothers.

Second…Nanowrimo — or, for the uninitiated: National Novel Writing Month.   A friend asked if I planned to participate, and I responded that I couldn’t take a month off to write a novel because I had to write a novel.

But then I got to thinking. The goal for Nanowrimo is to write 50,000 words. What if I took the month of November and tried to write 50,000 words on the Young Adult project I am so interested in trying to write.

So, I’m going for it…whether this counts as me participating in Nanowrimo, I’m still a little foggy on, but I am hoping that the fact that others are hard at work will inspire me.

I believe, in theory, you are supposed to start a new project for Nano. But as far as I am concerned, whatever. If you join in the frenzy, and put down 50K words on an existing project, why shouldn't that be a win for you just as much as the getting the first 50K of a new story would be for me.

That's why it's kind of a yes and a no. I figure I'll use the inspiration to try to get the 50K...even though I'm not really participating. I've got about 7,500 words going in...of course, they don't count toward my 50K.

I'm so delighted to be able to do this project...it's something I have been REALLY looking forward to.

I think a few years ago (shortly after I last tried it) the NaNo forums introduced a section for "rebels" who were continuing a project/cowriting with a total goal of 100K/writing something besides a novel/anything else NaNoWriMo-inspired but violating some of the "rules of the game." Take that as you will.

Yeah, that's the kind of thing I mean...not official but kind of a "in the spirit of..." ;-)

LOL

That would definitely boost my word count, but I think it would not be fair.

I think I've seen far more people talk about doing nanowrimo in the context of making their own take on it, than I have people actually doing the formal version... so any sort of "x amount of writing during the month of Nov" counts as nanowrimo in my eyes.

It certainly provides a lot of inspiration!
