02:43 pm: House or Apartment needed

Just discovered two friends were living in their car. They applied for an apartment they could have afforded (barely) but were turned down on credit.

I’m letting they stay here, but we already have seven people living here. So, they need something more permenant and quickly.

Does anyone have suggestions of places we could look or services that might help?

Call your church. They should have more of an idea of what is available in terms of helping your friends. Our city has a large Victorian home that is used to house families until they can get on their feet. Hopefully, your city has something similar.

My church, alas, is not big on charity. We're very good at praying for people, but less good a the practical side. John's church, though, does have various ways of helping. I will check with them and also one or two other churches I know of in town.

Might your local Habitat for Humanity at least know who to contact? I know they focus more on building homes for people rather than connecting people with rental properties, but they probably know the people who do.

In my local area, I could find several organizations quickly -- there's a wonderful source called the EASY Book for "Essential Aid and Services for You" which lists over a hundred pages of various organizations providing essential services like emergency housing, food pantries, clothes missions, etc. that can help people who're in dire straits.

It's quite possible that such a resource exists in your area and Habitat would have a copy and be able to suggest several organizations your friends could turn to.

There may be a Catholic Charities in the area-- I know my local one has a housing division that helps with such things.
