09:32 am: Keynes and Hayek

Okay, I’ve now watched the Keynes and Hayek Second Round video many, many, many times. (The kids love it, even if they can’t really follow it.)

I am so amazed at how well they blend economics and entertainment. The tune is catchy and we’re all humming it around the house… I also like how they make both men nice guys and friendly with each other.

But my favorite part…and it just awes and mistifies me every time…is the subtly of the scene where Keynes is down, the guy in the ring is counting 1, 2, 3…while in the background shots fat cats exchange money.  Then, all of a sudden, Keynes stands up and he’s declared the winner. He looks shocked for a second, but then runs with it, while Hayek, the clear winner in real terms, gapes in puzzlement.

That bit is so cool, so subtle (you have to really watch for it) and so true to life–and to what is happening in our governments world wide–I find it just…wow.

What struck me the first time I watched it was the very last scene, where both Hayek and Keynes are being congratulated by different people. This, in particular, seemed very true-to-life. But I definitely see the Hayek-makes-sense-but-Keynes-declared-winner vibe, too.

Yes. I liked that, too...that some of the audience got Hayek, even if Lord Keynes was the "winner."

If you're convinced that Hayek *is* actually right, then I suppose that would be a point of sympathy in the movie, yes. Whereas, I tend to think that Hayek - or at least the general conservative economic opinion - is more right than Keynes, but still wrong about some things. So what struck me about the scene was that each side was more interested in congratulating their own champion than in continuing dialogue.

Thank you so much for sharing this link. I forwarded it to my MBA son, and I know he will enjoy it as much as I did.
