03:28 pm: How Come Dinosaurs Go To Die?

My daughter wants to know what wiped out the dinosaurs. Our answers did not satisfy her, so she wants to go look in every country to find out if there are dinosaurs somewhere. She says if she raises one from a baby ‘maybe it no go to eat everyone.’

She also wants to know ‘how come snake no go to die?’

Did you tell her they were wiped out by the hordes of Atlantis?

Not yet. I don't know how to translate Atlantis into Chinese.

Hmm. Don't a lot of proper names keep the original name? If she's into that kind of thing, it might be neat to introduce her to the myth, so she knows what Atlantis is. I heard eastern cultures have something similar, but do not know what it is.

A perceptive question from your daughter! How many reptiles survived while the Dinosaurs did not is a mystery being studied by paleontologists.

The closest she will get is the Komodo dragons from Indonesia. But they only make good pets for James Bond villains, I'm afraid.

And while it's not the only perk to that career path, the exit strategy is awful.

Everyone knows they were hunted to extinction by knights in the Middle Ages :P

Actually, some people think there are still dinosaurs.

I saw some out front recently, heralding spring: they were pecking the ground, which means there's grubs and stuff, which means that the ground thawed.

These particular dinosaurs fell into two groups, grackles and mourning doves. A question of classification.

Alligators are close, but I don't think the bunny would appreciate it.

You gave her the comet theory?

Has she seen Jurassic Park? They are using some of the same theory from that to resurrect the mammoths.

Passage I read just *today* (from the novel I Am Number Four)...

"Well, did you know that the dinosaurs really didn't go extinct? Aliens were so fascinated by them that they decided to gather them all up and take them to their own planet."

Very similar to Uncle Bill's explanation that they were hunted into extinction by time travelers. ;-)

Yes, but this way they are still alive, and Ping Ping just has to find the right planet to go to, to find them. ;)

Strangely enough I was thinking the same thing as I was watching the new Star Trek movie and thought of this post.

Raising a Dinosaur!

(Link)
I really enjoyed this statement from your daughter's perspective. As a young girl I always wanted a Dinosaur ( had large toy one tat my grandfather gave me) and a Dragon for companions! I knew I could raise them to be friendly to humans. I LOVE the original 'Dinotopia' book. The first in the series, if she has not read this book, it is a must! And a world we both (your daughter and I) would love to live in! The bigger the animal the better!
