09:06 am: Long Live Libraries!

If you love libraries or are in the mood for a bit of humor, check this out.

It’s delightful and funny and really made me laugh. But for some inexplicable reason, in the middle of the song at the end, I burst into tears. God bless librarians!

I never used to cry before I became a mother of a kid in NICU.

Now I am likely to tear up at anything. While others were panning the Disney Tarzan film, I was blubbing at Phil Collins, "Strangers Like Me."

Mothers of special needs kids with communication issues, you will understand why:

It's funny the things that make us cry...or make us feel that those we love are understood...like the song above.

The thing that made me cry was "Did you think we'd stop reading to your kids."

I love, love, love our local library! It has a great area for kids (that we recently discovered for our 15-month old) and tons of DVDs...oh, and books, too. I kind of get the "kid in a candy store" feeling whenever we walk in. What will I discover today!

My mom is a librarian, so maybe she instilled a love for libraries in me. I heard her complaining recently because they are short of funds (shock!) and want to put a measure on the ballot to raise taxes by a couple of bucks to cover the need. Sadly, she says it has no chance of passing because people just don't care enough.

Along with rest stops, the Hubble Space Telescope and snow plows, I can think of few better ways to spend tax money other than libraries.

I'm a librarian's kid too.

Thank you. If you'd like to leave such a comment on the youtube page, I'm sure they'd appreciate it.
I grew up in that system as a "library child."
Back in those days, there was no money. Half of the old school building we occupied was in tatters with no heat. The upper floor was home to pigeons. It's lovely now and the branches have grown. We have librarians with the push to make it happen. A lot of ballot initiatives over the 20 years I've worked there.

Yes, I work at the service center. Kept morale up this summer with do-it-yourself BBQ on Fridays during the rush for the new branch. The fellow in the blue shorts would play guitar. In his other life he is a professional tennis player and a heck of a nice guy.

Is he the guy who was moving stuff into a truck? We weren't sure exactly what that had to do with libraries...was that moving books to go between branches?

Yes, he and his coworker (AKA Mr. Snuggly) are couriers. Our collections are spread out over several counties but you can reserve books from any of them to be sent to your home branch. Also they do tote supplies. We'd have a much less robust system if we had to stick to our separate collections. The service center is where we keep overflow and process new (or excellent used condition) material.

lol

Amusingly, I watched this on my laptop at the library (free wifi!). They seem to be doing pretty well.

Oh, I spent many summers as a young teen "volunteering" at my mother's library. When there were no books to be shelved, I sat and read. While, other kids were out and about, I spent my summer afternoons in the library. Hmm, that might explain a lot. So many fond memories.

My husband used to run games at the branch near where the Wrights live. Later I snagged him for young adult programming. Classic Star Trek with plots inspired by classic science fiction.
Now my daughter is volunteering.

Our local library is having to do with less. The library is supported with tax revenue from personal property taxes, and real estate value has taken a dive. Fortunately, the Friends of the Library (volunteers) are stepping up to fund programs and help pay for things not in the budget. We should do fine this year and next. Hopefully, the economy will turn around by then.
