11:23 pm: Blue Beard

No, not the pirate, the other one, Dwalin.

I've read the Hobbit a dozen times, but I never noticed until John read it aloud to the boys, that Dwalin's beard is BLUE.

Not black, not brown...blue!

Other dwarves are described as having white, yellow, or red beards...not so odd.

But Dwalin, the first dwarf to visit Bilbo, has a blue beard.

How did I miss that?

It's easier to notice these things when you are reading to your children because the act forces you to pay attention, when you might otherwise be tempted or inclined to skip words and phrases.

I wonder if my friend the Tolkienphile remembers/knows this detail--I will have to ask him!

I never missed a thing. ;-) LOL no, really, I couldn't remember now *which* dwarf had a blue beard, but I do remember that there was one, because I always found it very fashionable the way their clothing and jewelry was colour-coordinated with their beards.

I'm impressed.

(I should add, we writers LOVE people like you. All these little details we put in that most readers never notice.)

And blue-beard wasn't a pirate, was he? He was that guy who married a dozen times and always killed his wifes.

I actually saw a "blue" horse that was just the perfect shade of gray that in the sunshine it looked to be the same pale blue of a forget-me-not.
